Thematic Expertise

Sectors We Work In

Our thematic expertise spans the full spectrum of humanitarian and development programming - from emergency response to long-term resilience and governance.

Where We Work

Eight sectors, one evidence base

Distribution of Axiom ME's engagements across eight core thematic sectors, tallied from our comprehensive track record. Integrated projects (e.g., Health + Nutrition + WASH) are counted in each sector they cover.

Health & Nutrition

Primary health care, maternal health, nutrition, disease surveillance and health system strengthening in fragile states.

WASH

Water, sanitation and hygiene programming monitoring and evaluation across urban and rural fragile settings.

Education

Access to quality education, school-based programming, teacher training and child-centred learning assessments.

Child Protection

GBV prevention and response, child protection, reintegration of children associated with armed groups.

Cash & Voucher Assistance

Post-distribution monitoring, fraud investigation, and market assessments for cash-based interventions.

Food Security & Livelihoods

Food security assessments, livelihood recovery, resilience programming and agricultural value chain analysis.

Governance & Peace

State-building, decentralization, peacebuilding, reconciliation and rule of law in post-conflict environments.

Emergency Response

Rapid assessments, post-disaster monitoring, humanitarian coordination and emergency needs analysis.

Security & Access

Risk, vulnerability and access - analysed in layers.

Operating in active-conflict and high-threat environments is not a checkbox; it is a continuous, multi-layered analysis that decides whether - and how - credible evidence can be gathered safely. We read the context, name the threats, map the vulnerabilities, and engineer the access, so our teams, the people we speak to, and the data all stay protected.

Understand

Context & conflict analysis

We never enter an environment we have not first read. Political-economy and actor mapping, conflict drivers and fault lines, power dynamics, historical grievances and seasonal patterns establish how the terrain actually behaves - and where evidence can be gathered without doing harm.

Assess

Threat & risk assessment

Each threat - armed conflict, IED/UXO, criminality and abduction, communal tension, disease, environmental hazard - is identified, scored on likelihood × impact, and mapped by location and time. The result is a living risk register, not a one-off form.

03
Expose

Vulnerability & exposure mapping

We test who and what is actually exposed to each threat: field staff and enumerators, respondents and protection-sensitive groups, local partners, physical assets, and the data itself. Mapping exposure against the threat register surfaces the real points of failure before deployment.

Solve

Mitigation & access strategy

Acceptance comes first - community entry through trusted local networks. Where physical access is denied we deploy remote and “ghost” monitoring, low-profile digital capture, movement and communications SOPs, consent and protection protocols, and contingency and medevac planning, so a credible evidence path remains open.

Sustain

Continuous monitoring & duty of care

Security is dynamic, so the analysis never stops. We track the situation in real time, run enumerator check-ins and supervisor back-checks, adapt deployment as conditions shift, and hold a non-negotiable duty of care to every person who collects or provides data.

This layered method is what lets Axiom deliver credible, traceable evidence from places others classify as no-go - without compromising the safety of our teams or the people we speak to.

Multi-Sectoral Approach

Many Projects Span Multiple Sectors

In fragile and complex environments, humanitarian and development challenges rarely fall into a single sector. Our teams are multidisciplinary by design - able to assess and analyse integrated programmes spanning health, WASH, food security, protection, and governance simultaneously. This integrated perspective enables more accurate impact measurement and more nuanced, actionable recommendations.
